It seems clear that San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler doesn’t have full control of the clubhouse. It came crystal clear when Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune reported a couple weeks back that there’s a disconnect between the clubhouse and the front office.

It’s even more clear now that Acee reported in his morning newsletter today that “key members of the team have let general manager A.J. Preller know their feelings regarding Tingler, and others say they plan to talk to either Preller or team chairman Peter Seidler.”

For fans who want Tingler gone (which seems like everyone), this is a positive sign towards that happening. In my opinion, the key members of the team are Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, Trent Grisham, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, and Blake Snell. You could include Eric Hosmer based on how many players like him in the clubhouse but he hasn’t played like a key member of the franchise.

If a few of them have expressed that they don’t want Tingler as the team’s skipper, it’s going to be hard for Preller to look them in the eye and say that Tingler is the best man for the job when the franchise is going to be missing the postseason despite being projected to win 96 games going into Spring Training, according to PECOTA.

As the days go on, it feels like more and more players believe Tingler isn’t the guy to lead the team going forward. We’ll see if Preller ultimately believes the same thing.
