Marlins' Pablo Lopez fans first nine hitters of game to set MLB record

Miami Marlins right-hander Pablo Lopez etched his name into the record books Sunday afternoon.

Lopez struck out the first nine batters he faced in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, setting a modern-day record previously held by New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom and retired pitcher Jim Deshaies.

Lopez's strikeout run ended in the fourth inning when Ehire Adrianza grounded out to first base to open the frame.

The 25-year-old struck out nine batters while walking two in six innings. He also allowed five hits and three earned runs.

Lopez is now 5-5 on the season with a 3.03 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 111 strikeouts in 101 innings. He is in his fourth season with the Marlins.
