Max Scherzer 'prefers' Buck Showalter to be Mets' next manager?

He's yet to take the mound in a New York Mets uniform, but free-agent acquisition Max Scherzer made a pretty significant pitch recently for the man he thinks should be the team's next manager.

Per Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the three-time Cy Young award-winner would like three-time Manager of the Year Buck Showalter to be the next person at the helm.

"The Mets began the interview process for their managerial search on Dec. 6, and while this list includes a number of strong candidates, one name has been receiving a substantial amount of support throughout the industry," Ragazzo wrote on Tuesday. "Showalter, 65, last managed in the big-leagues back in 2018 with the Baltimore Orioles. He has since spent the last three years as an analyst on MLB Network."

It's been reported that the Mets have five managerial candidates thus far -- Showalter, Brad Ausmus, Joe Espada, Matt Quatraro and Don Kelly.

Showalter has 20 years of MLB managerial experience, leading the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million deal with the Mets last week before the MLB lockout commenced.
