Mets reliever Trevor May reportedly hoping to return by late July

As Mike Rosenstein of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and others have reported, the first-place New York Mets could be looking to secure some bullpen help before the Aug. 2 MLB trade deadline comes and goes.

The Amazins may receive assistance from one of their own before that time.

Right-handed relief pitcher Trevor May hasn't taken the bump against MLB opposition since he was shut down in early May with a stress reaction on the lower portion of the humerus. According to Pat Ragazzo of FanNation's Inside the Mets, May will complete a third bullpen session that will feature him throwing around 20 pitches on Friday. Assuming all goes well, the 32-year-old will head to the club's spring training facility in Port St. Lucie late next week, presumably to toss against live batters.

The hope is that May will be scheduled for a rehab assignment that Ragazzo says "likely" will be with Triple-A Syracuse shortly after the All-Star break. As long as the righty is feeling good following those appearances, he could be back with the big-league club "by late July."

May appeared in eight games this spring and accumulated an 8.64 ERA over 8.1 innings of work before he landed on the injured list. He admitted in April he was pitching through discomfort at the time.
