Mets star pitcher Max Scherzer expected to miss six to eight weeks with oblique strain

The New York Mets made an announcement Thursday afternoon regarding injured starting pitcher Max Scherzer, and it appears that the three-time Cy Young Award winner won't return to the mound until at least summertime.

Scherzer removed himself from Wednesday's start against the St. Louis Cardinals due to left side discomfort. On Thursday morning, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo further reported that the flamethrower has been playing through "multiple blisters" on his pitching hand his last two starts.

The eight-time All-Star is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through 49 2/3 innings pitched covering eight starts in 2022. Scherzer will presumably join fellow ace Jacob deGrom — who hasn't appeared in a regular season game yet — on the injured list.

Since his first full year in the big leagues in 2009, Scherzer has only failed to record at least 30 starts in a season twice. He made 27 starts in 2019 with the Washington Nationals and finished with 12 outings during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
