Top MLB prospects called up during the second half of the season can be difference makers for teams in playoff contention or further their development for teams out of contention. The following list includes 25 top prospects who are likely to see an opportunity during the second half of the 2017 season.
1 of 25
Chance Adams, SP, Yankees
Reinhold Matay / USA Today Sports Images
Adams has taken a giant leap forward between Double-A and Triple-A this season, allowing only 11 earned runs in 64 innings between the two levels. He also has more than one strikeout per inning. If the Yankees need help in their rotation, Adams should be able to deliver this year.
2 of 25
Ozzie Albies, 2B, Braves
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images
Albies has struggled somewhat at the plate for Triple-A Gwinnett, but the ceiling still looks extremely high. The 20-year-old is hitting .262 with 15 steals in 54 games against more advance competition and could see the majors in August or September.
3 of 25
Jorge Alfaro, C, Phillies
Reinhold Matay / USA Today Sports Images
Alfaro got a quick look last September and is performing well at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season. Philadelphia's catcher of the future is batting .267-3-26, though his 3/58 BB/K in 188 plate appearances is a major concern.
4 of 25
Franklin Barreto, SS, Athletics
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images
The A's have been resistant to rush Barreto despite regular shortstop Marcus Semien's early-season injury. Barreto is hitting .278-7-31 at Triple-A Nashville and is also younger than much of the competition at age 21. He could push Semien to second base later this season.
5 of 25
Lewis Brinson, OF, Brewers
Soobum Im / USA Today Sports Images
Brinson is putting up good offensive numbers at hitter-friendly Triple-A Colorado Springs and has increased his stock since coming over from Texas for Jonathan Lucroy last year. He's hitting .319-6-23 with seven steals in 42 games, posting a .915 OPS for the year.
6 of 25
Willie Calhoun, 2B, Dodgers
Rick Scuteri / USA Today Sports Images
L.A.'s MLB roster is crowded, to say the least, but Calhoun has the ability to help. The power he showed the last two years continues, hitting .290-10-22 with an .850 OPS in 51 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
7 of 25
Matt Chapman, 3B, Athletics
Rick Scuteri / USA Today Sports Images
Making contact isn't Chapman's forte, but he has the power and defense to be an excellent major league regular. He's hitting .255-14-26 in 42 games at Triple-A Nashville.
8 of 25
Jacob Faria, SP, Rays
Jonathan Dyer / USA Today Sports Images
Faria is part of a loaded Triple-A Durham rotation and leads the minors in strikeouts with 84 in only 58.2 innings. The Rays might night have a spot for him in their rotation this year, but he will get a look for Tampa given his strikeouts and 3.07 ERA.
9 of 25
Derek Fisher, OF, Astros
Steve Mitchell / USA Today Sports Images
Fisher's high strikeout rate was a major knock on him before this season, but he's made some progress at Triple-A Fresno. He's hitting .338-14-39 with 11 steals in 21 attempts and 50 strikeouts in 55 games.
10 of 25
Clint Frazier, OF, Yankees
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images
Acquired from Cleveland for Andrew Miller last year, Frazier continues to produce power at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He's hitting .245-9-30 and is clearly New York's center fielder of the future.
11 of 25
Stephen Gonsalves, SP, Twins
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images
Gonsalves got a late start to his season due to shoulder trouble but is off to a nice start at Double-A Chattanooga. He has a 2.45 ERA over four starts and could see time in Minnesota late in the year if he can keep his arm healthy.
12 of 25
Brent Honeywell, SP, Rays
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images
Honeywell's ERA at Triple-A Durham isn't pretty (5.10), but he continues to consistently throw strikes with a 55/10 K/BB in 47.2 innings. His top-flight stuff and control make him a safe No. 2 starter in the majors.
13 of 25
Rhys Hoskins, 1B, Phillies
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images
One of the most underrated hitting prospects in baseball, Hoskins is tearing through the Triple-A International League. He's hitting .301-13-45 with 31/36 BB/K in 57 games after hitting 38 home runs at Double-A Reading last season.
14 of 25
Austin Meadows, OF, Pirates
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images
Meadows is considered Andrew McCutchen's long-term replacement, though his 2017 season at Triple-A Indianapolis hasn't been great. He's hitting .256-3-26 with nine steals but will almost certainly see time in Pittsburgh during the second half.
15 of 25
Francisco Mejia, C, Indians
Rick Scuteri / USA Today Sports Images
Cleveland fans can't wait for Mejia's offense given the struggles the organization has seen at catcher over the last few years. He's hitting .325-3-15 in 33 games at Double-A Akron and could be a factor over the last two months.
16 of 25
Yoan Moncada, 2B, White Sox
Rick Scuteri / USA Today Sports Images
The top prospect in baseball, Moncada seems ready for the majors but continues to bide his time at Triple-A Charlotte. The Cuban is hitting .295-6-18 with 12 steals in 46 games.
17 of 25
Andrew Moore, SP, Mariners
Joe Camporeale / USA Today Sports Images
Seattle has seen an almost unprecedented number of injuries to its starting rotation but has been resistant to speed up Moore's development. He's allowed 21 earned runs in 71.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season.
18 of 25
Ryan O'Hearn, 1B, Royals
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images
O'Hearn could be the replacement for pending free agent Eric Hosmer next season. He's hitting .258-7-18 at Triple-A Omaha after hitting 23 home runs last season.
19 of 25
David Paulino, P, Astros
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images
Paulino's season started with arm injuries, but he's now back at Triple-A Fresno. He posted a 2.00 ERA between three minor league levels last season and could be very helpful as a reliever in Houston this year.
20 of 25
Amed Rosario, SS, Mets
Butch Dill / USA Today Sports Images
It seems like only a matter of time before Rosario is starting in Queens. He's hitting .340-5-40 with 11 steals at hitter-friendly Triple-A Las Vegas and doing so against older competition at age 21. He could jump in if the Mets have a fire sale or force Asdrubal Cabrera over to third base.
21 of 25
Lucas Sims, SP, Braves
Butch Dill / USA Today Sports Images
The Braves organization is loaded with young arms, and Sims seems like the most ready at Triple-A Gwinnett. The former first-round pick has fixed his control this season, posting a 4.13 ERA and 62/19 K/BB in 61 innings.
22 of 25
Dominic Smith, 1B, Mets
Reinhold Matay / USA Today Sports Images
Smith, a former first-round pick, gives the Mets reason to move on from Lucas Duda at first base. He's hitting .318-7-39 with an .848 OPS at hitter-friendly Triple-A Las Vegas.
23 of 25
Rowdy Tellez, 1B, Blue Jays
Logan Bowles / USA Today Sports Images
Toronto could be looking at rebuilding during the second half. Tellez would be part of that rebuild as arguably the organization's best hitting prospect. He's hitting .215-4-24 at Triple-A Buffalo after hitting .297-23-81 at Double-A New Hampshire last season.
24 of 25
Gleyber Torres, SS, Yankees
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images
Acquired last year for Aroldis Chapman, Torres has the ability to be a star. The 20-year-old is hitting .264-6-25 with seven steals between Double-A and Triple-A this season, and flashes terrific defense.
25 of 25
Brandon Woodruff, SP, Brewers
Mike Krebs / MiLB.com
Milwaukee could certainly use more starting pitching, and Woodruff has the polish to help. He has a 3.36 ERA and 59/17 K/BB in 61.2 innings at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.
