New York Yankees top prospect Jasson Dominguez was hit with a crushing blow last season when he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery.
Things didn’t get much better for Dominguez early on in 2024, as an oblique injury knocked him out of action.
However, the Yankees called Dominguez up from the minor leagues this month, and now, the outfielder is being projected to make the team’s playoff roster.
Not only that, but he is expected to start.
Jake Devin of Pinstripe Alley has released his predictions for New York’s 26-man postseason roster, and he has Dominguez starting in left field.
This may seem a bit controversial due to the fact that Dominguez didn’t touch the field at Yankee Stadium until mid-September, but given how horrendous Alex Verdugo’s bat has been the past several months, the Yankees may feel that their ceiling will be higher with Dominguez—at least offensively.
In 12 games since being called up, the 21-year-old has gone 8-for-40 with a couple of home runs. That included a two-run blast in a win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday night.
Dominguez slashed .314/.376/.504 with 11 homers and 35 RBI over 250 plate appearances in the Yankees’ minor-league system this year.
The Dominican native originally signed with the Yanks as an international free agent back in 2019 and immediately established himself as one of the top prospects in baseball.
He made his big-league debut last season, slashing .258/.303/.677 with four long balls and seven RBI in eight games. He entered 2024 as the 16th-ranked prospect by Baseball America.
Dominguez owns a lifetime minor-league slash line of .274/.373/.444.
Highly regarded for his five-tool potential, Dominguez has encountered some defensive struggles in limited action this season, but his offensive upside may ultimately compensate for it.
We’ll see what the New York Yankees decide to do with “The Martian” once October arrives.
