Padres fans, is it time to panic?

It has not been a good month for the San Diego Padres.

In the last month, the team has a 12-15 record and its lead for the second Wild Card spot is slipping to just 1.5 games compared to a six-game lead the team held on July 19.

The pitching rotation has been decimated by injuries to Yu Darvish, Dinelson Lamet, Chris Paddack and recently-signed Jake Arrieta.

Without proper starting pitching, the team is allowing a chunk of runs to some of the league’s worst teams.

In the last 13 games, the Padres faced teams under the .500 mark and allowed 69 runs, while scoring just 53 and finishing with a record of 5-8.

Fernando Tatis returned to the lineup Sunday, so a majority of those games came without the team’s leader in OPS, but since Tatis has returned to the lineup, the woes have continued.

According to FanGraphs, the team held a 93.3% chance of making the playoffs on July 19, but that number has slipped down to 45.1%.

The schedule is also not getting any easier. The team faces the Philadelphia Phillies, who sit three games back in the Wild Card race for three games at home and then the Dodgers come to town for three more.

The Dodgers and Padres also meet twice more in Los Angeles from September 10-12 and from the 28th to the 30th next month.

The team also faces the San Francisco Giants 10 more times this season, with seven of those meetings on the road, including the final three games of the season. Throw in four games against the Atlanta Braves and three against the Houston Astros and that makes it 26 of the last 39 games against opponents that are projected to reach the playoffs this season.

While the schedule and numbers look bleak for the Friars’ postseason hopes, the team has proven throughout the year that its talent can be placed amongst the best in the game. The Padres are 7-3 against the defending champion Dodgers this season and have not been at its healthiest in this slump.

If the team can avoid the injury bug and compete in the clutch like it has shown earlier in the season, then the Padres have the ability to make the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The Padres are still in the driver’s seat holding on to that 1.5 game lead, but it’s going to take a spark from somewhere on the team to jolt this car back on the road and ride into October.
