Left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber is entering MLB free agency for the first time since the 2022 offseason, and this time, he is positioned to command a significantly more lucrative deal. His four-year, $79 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies proved to be a major success, both for the team and for Schwarber’s career trajectory.

Now approaching his age-33 season, Schwarber has shown no signs of slowing down. His 2025 campaign was one of the best of his career, earning him his second All-Star selection with the Phillies and a spot as a National League MVP finalist. He played in all 162 games, posting a .240 batting average, .365 on-base percentage and .928 OPS with an NL-best 56 home runs and an MLB-leading 132 RBIs.

Schwarber’s power production remains elite, and his durability and consistency make him one of the most coveted bats on the free agent market this winter.

As Schwarber continues to explore his options in free agency, the left-handed slugger received big news during the 2025 MLB Awards show on Thursday. He was named to the Second Team as a designated hitter.

While Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers earned the First Team nod, Schwarber still defeated tough competition for the second spot, including George Springer of the Toronto Blue Jays and Rafael Devers of the San Francisco Giants.

The Phillies shared the news on X.

Fan voting accounted for 50% of the selection process, with the remaining 50% determined by a panel of experts. The All-MLB Teams have been in place since 2019 to recognize full-season performance, offering a broader measure of excellence than the All-Star Game, which only reflects first-half contributions.

Schwarber’s All-MLB Honor Comes Ahead of Free Agency Decision

Schwarber’s recognition is well-deserved, and his value to the Phillies extends beyond the box score. He has been a perfect fit in Philadelphia, embraced by fans for his abilities on and off the field.

Schwarber has expressed interest in returning, especially with unfinished business after consecutive early postseason exits in the NLDS. The Phillies remain contenders heading into 2026, with Bryce Harper and Trea Turner anchoring the core, though the team will need to address its outfield depth.

The Phillies were the fourth organization that Schwarber has suited up for in his 11-year career. He debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 2015 before playing for the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox. His time in Philadelphia has arguably been his most impactful, and both sides understand that keeping him could be critical to another deep playoff run.
