A new Pope was named at the Vatican City earlier this week, as Pope Leo XIV was elected in the 2025 enclave after the death of Pope Francis a couple of weeks back. He is the first ever American-born person to take the title, originally hailing from the city of Chicago.
It was confirmed shortly after he was reigned in that he has been a fan of the White Sox, and some internet sleuthing has uncovered hard video evidence of Pope Leo XIV in person at a World Series game on the South Side in 2005.
The White Sox have been one of the least-successful MLB franchises in their 124 years of existence. They have qualified for the postseason just 11 times in that span, a percentage of 8.8%, and had zero World Series titles to their name between the years 1917 and 2004.

But that all changed during the 2005 season, which saw Chicago pull off a sweep of the Houston Astros in order to bring home an elusive championship. It was the one shining moment in the team’s tortured history, and Pope Leo XIV was there.
On Friday, a video clip from a FOX broadcast from that year’s World Series shows the then 49-year-old in the crowd during a tense moment in Game 1. His name was Robert Francis Prevost at the time, and the cameras panned to him when the White Sox were up 5-3 in the top of the 9th with two outs. His was one of the many nervous faces shown in the crowd, and he appeared to be standings next to a man holding a young child.
Before the video surfaced, there was a photo of Pope Leo XIV at the same game found by the Chicago Sun-Times. He appeared to be talking on a cell phone in the picture.
