Rays' Yonny Chirinos to have Tommy John surgery, likely out until 2022

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed on Friday that 26-year-old right-hander Yonny Chirinos will undergo Tommy John surgery on Monday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

Chirinos will miss the rest of the 2020 season and likely all of the 2021 campaign.

As mentioned by Alyson Footer of the club's official website, Chirinos was sidelined for most of Tampa Bay's Summer Camp sessions after he tested positive for the coronavirus. Right shoulder inflammation sent him to the injured list earlier this month after he had made only a pair of starts.

Chirinos returned to the hill last Sunday to face the Toronto Blue Jays and completed 2 2/3 innings. In 11 1/3 innings this year, he compiled a 2.38 ERA with 10 strikeouts.
