The ongoing drama surrounding Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox hasn't been going on for long, but it's been an arduous process. The Red Sox want Devers to play first base, while Devers isn't open to learning first base in the wake of Triston Casas' season-ending injury.
In an article from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Rosenthal reports that a trade of Devers amid this ongoing drama wouldn't be out of the question. Rosenthal said, "The idea of a trade at some point isn't all that far-fetched, even with Devers owed more than $250 million."
A large reason why Devers would be on the move would be the disconnect between him and the front office. Devers and Craig Breslow have been at the center of attention, and it's garnered interest around the baseball world.
For nearly every single team in baseball, trading for Devers would be on the table. One of the best hitters in the game becoming available is a rarity, and with him under contract through the 2033 season, a team would be getting nearly nine seasons of control on a top-flight hitter.
Devers started off the 2025 season going hitless through his first 23 at-bats, but since then has been on a tear. Now, Devers is batting .280 with an OPS of .888. Devers has 44 hits, 25 runs, 12 doubles, seven home runs, 31 RBI, one stolen base, 31 walks, and 47 strikeouts in 191 plate appearances.
The production Devers has shown at the plate is tantalizing for many teams around the Major Leagues. If Rosenthal's report is to be believed, then a Devers trade might be closer than initially thought.
While nothing is final, nor are there any team-specific rumors, or calls made to the Red Sox for Devers reported yet, the speculation surrounding Devers is painting a picture of availability, something unthinkable heading into the 2025 season.
The three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger would be a great fit on nearly every team. With 31 teams likely to have interest, the Red Sox, if they decide to trade Devers, could get a strong return for one of the best batters in baseball.
