Red Sox Make Under-the-Radar Signing After Trade Last Week
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox could always use some depth, and after trading Blake Sabol to the Chicago White Sox in a smaller deal over the weekend, they’ve accomplished just that.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Red Sox have signed Ronaldo Hernandez, a player who was with the organization from 2021 to 2023, to a minor league contract.

“The Red Sox depleted their Triple-A catching depth by shipping Blake Sabol to the White Sox in a minor trade over the weekend. Now, they’re reinforcing the group with an old friend.

“Ronaldo Hernández, who was with the organization from 2021 to 2023 and played 211 games for Triple-A Worcester, is re-joining the WooSox on a minor league contract, sources said. He should be active Friday when Worcester opens the second half of its season,” he wrote.

The Red Sox seem to have their catching position figured out at the moment, but it’s possible they’ll look to bring someone up, even if it's just because they need innings behind the plate.

Hernandez is a decent player and has proven that throughout his professional career, but he still has a bit to go before he makes a real impact at the highest level.

He was with the New York Yankees Triple-A squad for parts of the 2025 season, hitting .221 with two home runs. Throughout his minor league career, he's posted a .280 batting average with 104 home runs.

Depending on what the Red Sox want to do over the next few weeks, it's possible they could call up the 27-year-old for help.
