Red Sox reacquire one-time All-Star Jackie Bradley Jr., ship Hunter Renfroe to Brewers

Nobody knows if and/or when the 2022 MLB season will begin, but in the waning moments before the baseball lockout commenced, the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a notable trade involving four players.

In the deal, the Red Sox sent power-hitting outfielder Hunter Renfroe to the Brewers in exchange for former longtime Boston defensive wizard Jackie Bradley Jr., as well as minor-league infielders David Hamilton and Alex Binelas.

"JBJ" was selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur draft at 40th overall and the centerfielder made his MLB debut in 2013. Over his nine-year career, Bradley Jr. has had his struggles at the plate, boasting a career .230/.311/.394 slash line, but the 31-year-old has been among the most reliable and impressive outfielders in the game since joining the league.

Among Bradley Jr.'s career highlights have been an All-Star nod in 2016 -- when he posted career-highs in home runs (26), RBIs (87), walks (63), OPS (.835), hits (149), runs (94) and total bases (271) -- and a Gold Glove award in 2018. JBJ was also a member of the 2018 World Series-winning Red Sox team and earned ALCS MVP honors that year.

Renfroe was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 31st round in 2010, but didn't sign, and was selected by the San Diego Padres with the 13th overall pick in 2013. The 29-year-old played the first four seasons of his career with the Padres, collecting 85 home runs between 2017 and 2019.

Renfroe spent the 2020 campaign with the Tampa Bay Rays before signing with Boston for the 2021 season. During his lone season with the Red Sox, Renfroe hit 31 home runs and set career-highs in RBIs (96), batting average (.259), runs scored (89), hits (135) and doubles (33).
