Report: Cleveland baseball has new name, but not ready to reveal it

Back in early June, the Cleveland Indians confirmed they'd narrowed down the list of potential new names for the franchise as they look to rebrand and move on from the current name and previous logo deemed racist by some Native American groups and others.

It appears the overall process is finished.

Insider Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reported Thursday that Cleveland has chosen a new name for the club but is not yet ready to reveal it. A source neither confirmed nor denied an announcement is imminent, but it's been assumed the franchise would have a new name by the start of the 2022 MLB regular season.

In total, 1,198 names were collected as part of a process that also included 140 hours of conversations with local baseball fans, community leaders and current Cleveland baseball employees. Cleveland stopped using the Chief Wahoo logo on merchandise after the 2018 season.

It was previously reported the rebrand will include an actual second name rather than something similar to the NFL's Washington Football Team. Cleveland Guardians, Cleveland Spiders and Cleveland Avengers are among names linked with the franchise in rumors, but the club has offered few hints.
