Tigers 1B C.J. Cron will have season-ending knee surgery

Detroit Tigers first baseman C.J. Cron has decided to undergo season-ending knee surgery, announcing the news via social media on Saturday.

Cron left the Tigers' 5-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday with a sprained left knee. He was struck by a hard-hit grounder in the fourth inning and eventually walked off the field with assistance.

Detroit added Cron this offseason after he spent one season with the Minnesota Twins.

The 30-year-old is averaging .190 at the plate this season with eight RBI and four home runs. Before playing for the Twins, he spent time with the Los Angeles Angels and Tampa Bay Rays.

Through seven seasons, Cron is averaging .257 at the plate and an .776 OPS, and he has 373 RBI and 118 home runs over that span.

The Tigers now will have the option to start Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro or Miguel Cabrera at first base in Cron's absence.
