Trevor Story Speaks on Red Sox First Base Drama

After the season-ending injury to Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas, the Red Sox have been looking for his replacement. During the Red Sox's search for their new first baseman, a lot of drama has been stirred up.

Rafael Devers came forward and stated he wasn't interested in trying out at first base. Red Sox manager Alex Cora also didn't even ask Devers if he could try it out, either.

Another Red Sox infielder, shortstop Trevor Story, was asked by a reporter pre-game if he had been asked to try playing at first base. In a post from Chris Cotillo of Mass Live on Twitter/X, Story answered that question with a straightforward answer of no, he hasn't.

Story said that the Red Sox haven't approached him about playing at first base. While still a possibility, it seems unlikely to come to fruition if he hasn't been asked yet.

Story is a 10-year veteran, and is in his age 32 season. Throughout his entire career, Story has never once played first base. He's been a middle infielder or designated hitter his entire career.

Moving him from short stop would also create a hole in at short stop, a much more difficult position to fill than first base. It would also require him to learn a new position, also something difficult.

Making any changes to Story's routine wouldn't be the best idea either, as Story is playing at a solid level for the Red Sox. He has a .253 batting average with a .667 OPS and 5 home runs. While not the best start to a season for Story, it's not as bad as he's looked at times in a Red Sox uniform.

Story being asked about potentially playing first base would be a surprising move for the Red Sox to consider. While finding a new first baseman is a priority, moving Story off shortstop isn't the best solution.

On the other hand, Devers moving to first would just open the designated hitter spot, a much more manageable roster spot to find a replacement for.

With all of the drama surrounding the Red Sox pursuit of a first baseman replacement, Story hasn't been involved.

But after being asked if he's been asked to play first, his answer shut down that possibility, even if it was low to begin with.
