The Yankees were hoping to get healthier as they approached Opening Day. Instead, the injuries have continued to pile up.
On Saturday, general manager Brian Cashman confirmed to reporters that Clarke Schmidt and reliever Ian Hamilton will begin the season on the injured list. It's not a shocking development, but it’s yet another hit to a roster that's taken more than its fair share of damage this spring.
Schmidt had been working through shoulder fatigue and back issues this spring and never got fully built up to a starter's workload. He was expected to be a key piece of the rotation, especially with Gerrit Cole sidelined and Luis Gil also on the shelf.
With Schmidt down, the Yankees have said they will put Carlos Carrasco on the roster, and Will Warren will likely take the other rotation spot. They were two pitchers who entered camp competing for one job and are now essential to keeping the team afloat early. There's upside there, especially with Warren. Still, there's also the reality that the Yankees are heading into the season without their ace, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year and their number four starter.
Hamilton's absence stings, too, in a different way.
The 29-year-old had an offseason infection, which kept him from ramping up and he's not ready to start the season in the bullpen. In 35 appearances last season, Hamilton posted a 3.85 ERA. He is the fifth reliever the Yankees will have to put on the injured list to start the season, joining Jonathan Loaisiga, Jake Cousins, Scott Effross, Tyler Matzek and
The Yankees will press forward with what they've got — a lineup built to mash and a pitching staff just trying to hold things together.
