Cain Velasquez denied bail for a second time in attempted murder case

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was denied bail for a second time on Monday in his attempted murder case.

According to ESPN's Marc Raimondi, judge Shelyna Brown ruled against allowing Velasquez bail for a second time because of his "reckless disregard for human life." He is due back in court next month for a plea hearing.

Velasquez was arrested on Feb. 28 and is charged with attempted murder and 10 other gun-related charges. The arrest stems from Velasquez chasing down a man, Harry Eugene Goularte, who is being charged with molesting one of Velasquez's young relatives. Velasquez shot into a car Goularte was driving and hit a passenger. The passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The 39-year-old's attorney called the bail denial "infuriating", especially in light of the crimes Goularte himself committed.

Velasquez could face more than 10 years of jail time if he is convicted. His plea hearing is scheduled for June 10.

According to ESPN, Goularte was reportedly released from police custody on Feb. 25 "against the DA's orders," just a few days before the incident with Velasquez. He had also been ordered to stay under house arrest. His own plea hearing is set for June 6.
