Combate Global will be placing one of their most popular female fighters in a May main event fight against a former Bellator title challenger on a prove-it contract.

Sportsnaut was first to report that Bellator veteran Alejandra Lara will make her promotional debut on May 11 when she takes on red-hot flyweight Lucero Acosta in the headliner of their planned card in Miami, FL.

“This fight between ‘La Loba’ and ‘Azul’ Lara is between two of the most celebrated women’s mixed martial artists in the Americas, and we look forward to it being the most watched women’s fight in MMA history,” Combate Global CEO Campbell McLaren said in a statement.

Lara, who climbed the ladder to challenge for the Bellator flyweight title in 2018, owns a professional record of 9-7 overall. All four of her most recent defeats have been via decision, including a pair of razor-thin split decision setbacks.

The native of Columbia was one of the fighters who was cut following the merger of Bellator and PFL MMA late last year.

Alejandra Lara is currently on a one-fight deal with Combate Global

Lara is another important fighter for the Combate Global roster. The promotion focuses on targeting Spanish-speaking nations, and Lara is a well-known community member. Over the years, Combate has seen significant growth in Latin America as they push their Latin-themed brand. The addition of Lara gives them another key face for a push further into South America. However, there is a hold-up.

MIke Afromowitz, Combate vice president, confirmed Lara’s deal is a one-fight contract. “Our door is open for a long-term deal,” he said. “I want to see how she performs on May 11.” So if Lara falls to Acosta in May she may be one-and-done in the promotion and move her losing skid to five straight.

The May 11 Combate Global card takes place from Miami, Florida, and airs on FUSE and Univision.
