Georges St-Pierre would return to UFC only to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov

Georges St-Pierre (26-2-0), viewed by many as the greatest professional mixed martial artist in history, turned 39 years old in May and hasn't competed in the UFC since November 2017.

That doesn't mean the former welterweight and middleweight champion is ruling out a return to the Octagon. Such a bout likely would, however, have to include undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0-0) as his opponent. St-Pierre recently said, per Marc Raimondi of ESPN:

"If I ever come back, I'm not coming back for many fights. If I come back, it would be for one fight. And I need to take, for me, the biggest fish. And the one — for me, I believe — the top guy right now, the name is Khabib. As a fighter, the most exciting thing is to take the guy who seems invincible, unbeatable. He has the aura of invincibility. But it's also the scariest thing to do."

St-Pierre added:

"When I train, I feel I still get it. If you would have asked me, 'Would you like to fight Khabib?' in the middle of my training session or right after when I'm in the gym and my adrenaline is up, I'd be like, 'Yeah, let's do it! I'm excited!' But then after I take a hot shower, I go eat, hang out, go back home and I'm thinking about all these dramas and stuff, I'm like, 'Hell no. I'm not going back into that zoo. Oh, no. I'm good where I am.' So I have a mixed feeling about it."

St-Pierre hasn't been in the United States Anti-Doping Agency drug testing pool since February 2019, and he admitted the "chances are very low" he will fight Nurmagomedov after a potential contest between the two fell apart in late 2018. Another issue that could eliminate this dream showdown from a future imagined card is Nurmagomedov's title unification fight versus interim champion Justin Gaethje on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi.

Gaethje (22-2-0) will enter that night a massive underdog, but Nurmagomedov might already be looking past his next challenger and thinking about earning a 30th consecutive pro win and doing so on a night when UFC royalty is his opposition.
