For Alexandre Pantoja (27-5), getting the opportunity to fight in front of the home crowd doesn’t come often. However, the UFC Flyweight Champion will get that chance on May 4 in Rio de Janeiro, when he’ll fight in the main event of UFC 301 against Steve Erceg.

But this fight offers more than the chance to impress the home crowd. It also offers the opportunity for Pantoja to become one of the greatest flyweight fighters ever. With a victory over Erceg, he can further boost his fighting portfolio in MMA.

So what does being the hometown hero mean for the UFC Flyweight Champion at UFC 301? What does he need to do to convince fans and experts alike that he’s the real deal? While Erceg might be “lucky” to get his title shot, it also offers the champ the chance to boost his resume.

Alexandre Pantoja’s Accomplishments

Alexandre Pantoja built up his MMA resume by taking down numerous flyweight stars. That includes Brandon Moreno (UFC Fight Night 129 and UFC 290) and Brandon Royval (UFC on ESPN 29 and UFC 296). With his resume built up, he’s thrust himself to #10 in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings.

On top of his flyweight accomplishments, he’s also earned “Performance of the Night” honors with his fight against Alex Perez (UFC 277). That honor was earned two more times, with Pantoja earning the distinction of “Fight of the Night” twice. Quite an impressive resume, right?

How Alexandre Pantoja Can Become a UFC Legend

For one, a decisive early victory can boost Alexandre Pantoja’s career. Five of his last eight fights were decided by decision. Additionally, two of those were losses. However, an early-round knockout or submission of Steve Erceg can change the conversation while also elevating his profile.

Additionally, Pantoja would win his sixth consecutive fight. As the UFC Flyweight Champion, it would raise the question of who could take him down. Both Moreno (#2) and Royval (#1) are at the top of the flyweight rankings and also lost to the Brazilian fighter twice.

If Pantoja can beat Erceg convincingly at UFC 301, he can establish himself as a UFC force. It offers the Brazilian flyweight the opportunity to hold the belt for a while, also marking his presence in the promotion. Doing it in front of the home crowd? That’s just icing on the cake.
