Thiago Silva captained Brazil to an impressive 2-0 victory over Serbia in the Selecao‘s opening 2022 World Cup match.

After struggling to break down a resoulte Serbian defence in the first half, the Brazilians ramped up the pressure in the second half and finally opened the scoring just after the hour mark, when Richarlison poked home following a Vanja Milinkovic-Savic save.

Eleven minutes later, Richarlison got his second, producing a fantastic overhead kick from Vinicius Jr.’s cross.

While the attack was scintillating in the second half, the defence was solid, with Silva and Marquinhos holding firm at the back for Brazil.

As well as putting in a solid shift at the age of 38, Silva set a new personal record, as he made it 12 World Cup games where he hasn’t been dribbled past, the last time that happened coming back in 2014 against the Netherlands.

This Brazil performance has all the hallmarks of a team that can go all the way, and it is understandable why so many people have Tite’s side as the outstanding favourites to win the competition.
