The UFC is finalizing a top ten heavyweight rematch for August. Yesterday, MMA Mania was the first to report that the promotion is finalizing a matchup between 8th ranked Marcin Tybura (25-8) and 9th ranked Serghei Spivac (16-4).
As of now, it’s being reported that this fight will be three rounds so it will likely serve as a Fight Night co-main event although that’s not confirmed at this time. These two first fought back in 2020 with Tybura winning a lopsided decision over Spivac.
At the time, it was a huge win for Marcin Tybura. Tybura got off to a decent start inside the octagon having gone 3-1 in his first four fights. However, leading up to the Spivac fight, he had gone through a 1-4 stretch in five fights. That win over Spivac kicked off a five-fight win streak.
Since the Spivac fight, Tybura is 8-2 in the UFC. His only two losses have come against Alexander Volkov and current interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. The last time we saw Tybura was back in March when he took on Tai Tuivasa. Tybura weathered an early storm to submit Tuivasa at the end of the first round.
UFC Fight Night
Serghei Spivac lost his UFC debut to Walt Harris in under 60 seconds. That was his first professional loss. His second professional loss came in his third appearance when he suffered the loss to Tybura. Similar to Tybura, that fight actually kicked Spivac in the right direction.
While he didn’t get his hand raised that night, he won his next three fights which led him to a fight with Tom Aspinall. Like Tybura, Spivac was finished in the first round by the current interim heavyweight champion. After that loss, Spivac won three straight fights by finish which included a first round submission over the UFC’s knockout king Derrick Lewis.
After the Lewis fight, Spivac was given a headlining spot in Paris against former interim champion Ciryl Gane. Spivac never got going in the fight and ultimately was stopped in the second round so he’ll be looking to bounce back in August hoping to avoid a second straight loss for the first time in his professional career.
