As we fast approach UFC 299, one narrative shines through the most: Sean O'Malley avenging his first defeat to Marlon Vera at UFC 252.

Not only would it be O'Malley's first and only professional defeat, it would be marred by controversy. The American star would roll his ankle after Vera targeted the perennial nerve with low calf kicks --- something O'Malley has since called a 'fluke'.

The injury would be the start of the end for O'Malley as his movement was stifled and his striking significantly restricted. O'Malley would later collapse trying to cut an angle on his Ecuadorian foe, and Vera overwhelmed him with elbows from the guard, causing the stoppage.

Vera, a considerable underdog in the matchup, would notch one of the most significant wins of his career. "Chito" was coming off of a contentious decision loss to Song Yadong, and had he lost to O'Malley, he'd have seen a losing streak.

The victory paid huge dividends for Vera, who is now granted the opportunity to win a rematch against O'Malley for bantamweight gold at UFC 299 in March.
