Tony Ferguson recently underwent surgery to repair a serious injury that occurred just weeks before he fought Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296.

One of the most popular fighters on the UFC roster, Ferguson suffered his seventh loss in a row when he met Pimblett on the main card of UFC 296 and lost a unanimous decision.

“El Cucuy” has continually dismissed suggestions that he should retire amidst his current losing run, and now the former interim lightweight champion has revealed he tore his MCL during a training session leading up to the Pimblett matchup.

Ferguson’s post explains that he had surgery to repair his knee last week, but the 39-year-old also decided to go under the knife again for a procedure on his elbow to “get them both done & double-down”.

Having multiple surgeries done within a week of each other would be a massive concern at any stage of a fighter’s career, and given Ferguson’s age and current losing run this news will almost certainly generate more calls for the former interim UFC titleholder to hang up his gloves.

The 12-fight win streak that “El Cucuy” put together from 2013-2019 is one of the greatest runs in UFC history regardless of weight class, but even if the knee injury did play a part in his most recent loss, it likely won't change fan opinions on how underwhelming a performance that was for both Ferguson and Pimblett.
