UFC's Chris Weidman needs another leg surgery after setback
Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman (15-6-0) suffered a gruesome broken leg just seconds into his match against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 in April and was originally diagnosed to be sidelined for six to 12 months. Weidman surprised many, however, when he shared of video of himself walking just five weeks after he broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg:
There's now an unfortunate update, per Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie, as Weidman told SiriusXM's "MMA Today" on Wednesday that he's encountered a setback and that the bones in his leg aren't healing properly:
"I’m actually getting another surgery — I just found out," the 37-year-old explained. "I’m getting another surgery most likely on Aug. 11. They’re going to have to plate the fibula bone because it’s considered a non-union, so the bones aren’t healing the way it’s supposed to, which kind of sucks.
"I did expect setbacks and issues with this type of traumatic injury, and I’ve been through a lot."
Weidman's potential return to the octagon was up in the air even before this update due to the seriousness of the original injury, and it seems unlikely he'd be cleared to compete in the UFC before late next spring at the earliest.
He added that the upcoming procedure will be the 25th surgery of his life.
