For Werdum, this was his chance to avenge a 2008 TKO loss to dos Santos. At the time, it was considered a major upset, but dos Santos went on to become an elite MMA heavyweight. Werdum was able to bounce back from the loss and solidified his place in MMA history. So, this rematch was truly a battle of legends.

In the opening frame, dos Santos landed an inside leg kick. "Cigano" stuffed a takedown attempt. Werdum shot in for a single and dumped dos Santos down briefly. They engaged in a tie-up standing with dos Santos' back against the fence. They separated and Werdum got dropped with a right hand, but the round came to an end.

"Vai Cavalo" tried getting a takedown on dos Santos as he rolled on the mat, but to no avail. Werdum went for a wheel kick, but dos Santos ducked under. "Vai Cavalo" found himself on the mat trying to egg dos Santos on to get in his guard. It didn't work as round two came to an end.

Werdum continued to bleed on the side of his face in round three. Werdum's right eyelid appeared to be ripped up pretty bad. His left eye was closed as well.

The fight went the distance and dos Santos earned the split nod.
