Most UFC fighters would care deeply about an opponent's failed drug test for obvious reasons. An opponent using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) may have gained an unfair advantage, compromising the fairness and integrity of the fight. This not only poses greater physical risks, but it could also damage the fighter's reputation, career trajectory, and potential earnings.
For one former UFC interim heavyweight championship contender, this situation presents a new challenge and a chance to prove himself as one of the top athletes in the organization.
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Curtis Blaydes shared his thoughts on his next opponent, UFC newcomer Rizvan Kuniev, ahead of their scheduled bout at UFC 313: Pereira vs. Ankalaev. The top-five heavyweight contender admitted he was initially curious about Kuniev, who remains relatively unknown in the division.
“I had to Google him,” Blaydes said. “I watched his fight on [Dana White's] Contender Series—that’s really the only fight of his I’ve seen. He looks like your traditional heavyweight: swings hard and hopes to knock you out early.”
After further research, Blaydes discovered that Kuniev had been suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for multiple banned substances, including metenolone, drostanolone, 19-norandrosterone, and boldenone—all of which are anabolic steroids.
Upon learning about his opponent’s past, Blaydes remarked, “Even if he is on some stuff, I don’t believe it’s going to help him with his sprawling or help him take a punch. I’m all right with it, even if he is on some stuff.”
As the bout approaches, Blaydes emphasized his commitment to preparation and assured that he will not underestimate his opponent once the cage doors close, despite Kuniev's rookie status and past issues.
This matchup highlights Blaydes' readiness to face all challengers while also bringing attention to the ongoing concerns regarding PEDs in mixed martial arts. The outcome of this fight may influence future discussions on fair competition and the measures in place to maintain the integrity of the sport.
