Alex Bowman disqualification: Hendrick Motorsports issues statement, addresses possible appeal

Following the disqualification of Alex Bowman from the Bank of America Roval 400 on Sunday over the post-race weight of his car, the possibility for an appeal has emerged.

However, it’s unclear as of yet whether Hendrick Motorsports will go that route. The organization released a statement on Sunday evening concerning the shocking turn of events.

“We are working to understand the issue and will make a decision Monday about whether to submit an appeal,” Hendrick Motorsports wrote.

One potential avenue of appeal is that it appeared an object came loose from Bowman’s car during one of the turns in the race. Dashcam footage from another driver showed what appeared to be a significant piece dislodging from Bowman’s car over a bump in the course.

It’s possible that piece was enough to cause the weight discrepancy that got Bowman disqualified from the race, earning a P48 finish and therefore falling out of the top eight of the playoff standings on points.

If the Alex Bowman disqualification stands, Joey Logano will instead advance to the round of eight in the playoffs on points.

Updated NASCAR Cup Series Playoff Standings

The disqualification of Alex Bowman allowed Joey Logano to move up in the standings. And as things stand now, he would be in the round of eight.

That comes shortly after he admitted how difficult it was being left out of the field.

“I mean we fought hard for sure and I think Paul and the guys did a good job of executing the strategy of what we needed to do today,” Logano explained. “Just didn’t get quite enough there at the end, fell off a little bit too much that last run. Honestly, the 45 and Tyler and those guys did a good job driving up through the field and scored more points. It’s hard not to think about Richmond a little bit right now. I guess the positive for us we’re in the owners championship so we can confuse all the fans from here on out about drivers and owners championship. The money’s in the owners so we’ll keep fighting for the money.”

The rest of the advancing drivers into the round of eight are as follows:

  1. Kyle Larson +33
  2. Christopher Bell +13
  3. Tyler Reddick +10
  4. William Byron +4
  5. Ryan Blaney -4
  6. Denny Hamlin -8
  7. Chase Elliott -9
  8. Joey Logano -11
