Since the introduction of Next-Gen cars, the short track racing in the Cup series has been underwhelming. The Bristol race last month proved tier wear would be the perfect solution for fixing the issues. But NASCAR and its tier provider Goodyer is yet explore this option. Now three times Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin has asked the tier manufacturer to be more aggressive.
Denny Hamlin reminded NASCAR that the 7th gen cars they have made are horrendous in the traffic and is the worst in the segment the championship has ever had. He pointed that this can be solved to a certain extent if at least the left tiers of the car had more wear. The No:11 Toyota driver want’s good year to stop making such hard tiers.
These cars in traffic are horrendous. They're the worst car by far in traffic than what we've ever had. A lot of it is because we have tires that are pretty damn hard. The one at Richmond, I looked at the left-side wearers and they're not wearing. Goodyear has to get more aggressive on left-side tires at least to get more wear in the damn cars because we're all equaling out. Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.
The race at Bristol, that was won by Denny Hamlin, showed NASCAR the way towards making short track racing better. This also helped the conversation about increasing the horsepower to fixing tier wear. The sanctioning body and Goodyear has to listen to the drivers and come up with a solution that align with both parties’ policies.
Denny Hamlin explains why Next-Gen car race good in intermediatory tracks
The 23XI Racing co-owner ahead of urging Goodyear to fix the tiers, had pointed out that why the intermediate tracks have seen great runs in the Next-Gen era. He pointed out that the cars race good when there are multiple groves for drivers to attack, while the short tracks can’t afford to have the same.
We've seen this Next-Gen car repeatedly. We keep talking about it. We're going to talk about it this week at Martinsville as well. On racetracks that have one groove or one and a half grooves, it does not race well. The only way it races well is because on a mile and a half you can go somewhere else. You can go run a different line than someone else to get clean air. Denny Hamlin said.
As Hamlin pointed out, going into this week’s race at Martinsville will also see track position playing the key role on determining who is the winner. It would be interesting too if Goodyear would bring in tier that might repeat something similar to Bristol which can make the race really exciting.
