Justin Allgaier smells something at Daytona International Speedway and let’s just say, it isn’t burnt rubber.

Allgaier, competing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ United Rentals 300 Monday, detected a smell of marijuana, or has he called it, “the most potent reefer I’ve ever smelled,” coming from a fan in Turn 3 at Daytona.

Allgaier radioed it over to his team, per NASCAR senior content coordinator Cameron Richardson.

Well, that’s certainly a new one.

Justin Allgaier finishes strong in United Rentals 300

Allgaier, who raced his way to victory lane in his last Xfinity Series start at Daytona, picked up a P8 finish in the United Rentals 300. It wasn’t without some drama, however, as Allgaier spun himself out while leading on Lap 45. Allgaier appeared to go for a side draft on Cole Custer but got loose and completely lost control of his No. 7 Chevrolet.

Jim Pohlman, Allgaier’s crew chief, wasn’t happy and let him know about it on the radio.

“After this, we’re gonna have a talk. I’m mad,” Pohlman said.

Pohlman added: “I’m gonna take a deep breath here. The whole reason we’re in that position is your 6 car lengths out. The move, we can talk about that later. We lost this race last year shooting ourselves out. We cannot get that far out.”

Still, it’s an encouraging start for Allgaier, who has finished seventh or better in each full-time season he’s raced in the Xfinity Series. All that’s missing is an Xfinity Series championship to cement his legacy in the circuit.
