NASCAR penalizes Roush Fenway drivers Ryan Newman, Chris Buescher before Michigan race
It's probably safe to say that Roush Fenway drivers Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher probably don't have solid chances of placing well in Saturday's race at Michigan International Speedway.
According to The Athletic's Jordan Bianchi, NASCAR confiscated the spoilers off Newman and Buescher's cars. Both drivers forfeit their starting positions as a result, and their teams will lose 20 driver/owner points. They're also being fined $25,000.
NASCAR said both teams violated Section 12.4.12.b of the Cup rule book that states: "Except as specified, spoilers must be used exactly as supplied from the manufacturer."
Newman would've started 13th, and Buescher was supposed to start 22nd.
Newman, who is in his 19th full NASCAR Cup Series season, has not won a race this season. Similarly, Buescher also has not won a race. The highest both racers have finished is third.
