This past weekend in Las Vegas, Rajah Caruth made history with his first career win in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. However, he doesn’t want the focus on that history to take from his personal accomplishments.
Rajah Caruth became just the third Black driver to win a NASCAR national series race. He joined Wendell Scott and Bubba Wallace on that shortlist.
Ideally, Caruth would like NASCAR to get to a point where it’s not a big deal when a Black driver or other minority accomplishes something in the sport. The Spire Motorsports driver talked about how he personally views the situation with Matt Weaver of Sportsnaut.
“I think honestly right, it’s authentic to my personality and how I grew up, right, but it also doesn’t necessarily define me, right? Hopefully, we continue over the years to continue to grow more representation, because we see it on our pit crews, we are starting to see it in race teams whether it be through our engineering, our PR departments, obviously at NASCAR, so hopefully, you start seeing it more through the drivers so that way that’s not the headline anymore it’s just like how good are our drivers.
“Just because you don’t see it in any other sport, right? For the most part. Naturally, that’s kind of through the origins of the sport though it’s continuing to change. I don’t really know, I think again it’s authentic to me, it’s part of my heritage and I’m proud of it but also it’s not like a whole personality trait of myself.”
If Rajah Caruth keeps going out and winning races like he did in Las Vegas, all anyone will talk about is how much talent he has behind the wheel.
Rajah Caruth, Kyle Larson sweep for HendrickCars
In Las Vegas, two drivers were sponsored by HendrickCars.com and both of them won their respective races. Rajah Caruth got things started on Friday night with his victory. He started on the pole and crossed the line P1 as well.
When it came down to it, Caruth executed better than anyone else. Ty Majeski, Kyle Busch, and Nick Sanchez, other contenders for the win, all had pit road penalties late. So, with the door opened up, Caruth drove his Chevy Silverado to victory.
Kyle Larson on the other hand had a much more dominating performance. He started P2 and would run up front the entire afternoon on Sunday. On his way to the checkered flag, Larson swept both stages and showed that he is still the top driver in NASCAR.
Mr. H had to be a happy owner and sponsor. Both of his HendrickCars.com drivers won their races and put a big spotlight on the company. These Drive for Diversity alumni are making a lot of noise in NASCAR this year.
