NASCAR driver Kyle Busch very nearly had a weekend for the ages, winning the Fr8 208 Truck Series race in Atlanta and then finishing in third by an absolute hair in the Ambetter Health 400 in the Cup Series.
But Busch took a big loss following the weekend, albeit an absolutely hilarious one.
The veteran driver posted his thoughts on Instagram about the photo finish in the Ambetter Health 400, which featured the third closest margin of victory in NASCAR history when Daniel Suárez won over Ryan Blaney by 0.003 seconds and over Busch by 0.007 in a three-wide finish.
“Can’t get much closer than that,” Busch wrote. “Needed a couple more inches.”
His wife, Samantha Busch, followed up in the comments with the mother of all barbs. In good fun, of course.
“I’ve been telling you that for almost 20 years,” she wrote, with an emoji of a winking face with its tongue sticking out.
Jokes aside, the finish was one for the ages. Nobody was quite able to get enough of a draft to slingshot in front of the other drivers, and a threesome formed up right before the finish line.
Blaney took the inside track, while Kyle Busch was sandwiched between Blaney and Suarez on the outside.
NASCAR had to use high-tech imaging to determine the winner, as the finish was so close that FOX’s cameras at the finish line couldn’t clearly distinguish which driver finished ahead between Suarez and Blaney.
“Overall just real proud of everybody at RCR,” Busch said after the race. “Our Cheddar’s Camaro was fast. It’s good to see Daniel get a win. We were helping each other being Chevy team partners and working together there. Shows that when you do have friends and you can make alliances that they do seem to work, and that was a good part of today.
“I was hoping to get a win because I know everybody wanted a free No. 8 special on Monday from Cheddar’s, so damnit. We’ll have to do it again and find another one.”
Despite the disappointing finale at the Ambetter Health 400, it was a really strong weekend for Kyle Busch.
Busch notched his 65th career win in the Craftsman Truck Series, extending his own NASCAR record. He put on a clinic on Saturday for the younger drivers in the field, showing some veteran moves.
“Yo Rowdy Nation, what’s up, here we are in Victory Lane today, winning in the Truck Series race,” Busch said after the win. “Hey, at Atlanta, there’s been a lot of history here winning races at Atlanta from Billy Ballew days, all the way into KBM days, and now in the Spire days. So, thanks to everybody at Chevrolet, thanks to Rowdy Nation, appreciate everybody and all their support, this is awesome to get out here.”
