Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron has been the wingiest driver in the Next-Gen era. Since the start of the 2022 season, when the new car was introduced, he has won nine Cup races and made it into the championship-4 in 2023. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able take that final step and win Phoenix.

He would have the best chance of overcoming the challenging elimination playoff format and winning the title in 2024, as after just eight races into the season he has won thrice. Recently he discussed about the playoff format that he will tackling yet again in his Cup career in bid to win the championship and explained why he likes it.

William Byron pointed out that the playoff points system is very intense and stressful. But as a fan of the system, he pointed out that such challenges are needed in very sport, as it challenges everyone involved in it to deliver. He reckons the format brings out a lot of dramatic moments the series and fans needed.

I think the playoff points are a good thing, but I don’t know any different. I think it’s just the format and the nature of it is very intense… very stressful. But I think that’s what you want in sports, really… to have something [that] really challenges everyone. So, I feel like the way it is brings out those dramatic moments. f I were a fan, that’s what I would like to see. William Byron said via RACER.

William Byron tells NASCAR racers to take playoff format with a grain of salt

Not every drivers are a fan of the playoff format as it doesn’t always reward the most accomplished racer of the season with championship. The driver who could survive chaos in each playoff round has a chance to win the championship just as much as the racer who came into final four dominating the garage. Byron reckons drivers should take this with a grain of salt.

As a competitor, you do have to take it with a grain of salt, knowing that really, it’s about Phoenix. So, you’ve just got to prepare that way, know that’s the case and try to bring your best stuff then. William Byron said.

The HMS driver is coming into this weekend’s race as the most inform racer and will be hoping to continue his domination by scoring a 4th win. He will start the race P6 on Sunday, and with out a doubt will be challenger for the win if not for any unfortunate incidents.
