William Byron poised to be NASCAR's next juggernaut
During the 2023 NASCAR season, William Byron put together a breakout campaign, winning a season-high six races and piloting his Chevrolet to a third-place finish in the overall standings.
Following such major strides, the 26-year-old had high expectations entering this year's season opener at the Daytona 500.
Byron met them head on by winning the race over teammate Alex Bowman. Despite some controversy surrounding the finish and an 18-car crash a few laps prior, Byron had already returned to his winning form.
With the win, Byron seems poised for continued prosperity in 2024.
His progress should come as no surprise, as the Charlotte native has won at all other levels. His resume boasts championships at two of NASCAR's other levels, the Xfinity Series and K&N Pro Series East. Since his Cup Series debut in 2018, Byron has 11 wins, 42 top fives and 84 top 10s.
The difference now is his comfort at NASCAR's highest level. Byron has finished within the top 10 in points each year since 2021, with each result being better than the last. While the competition is stiff within his own team, Byron has found himself competing with, and beating, former champions Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson.
With his role in the team solidified, consistency established and another season of playoff experience under his belt, Byron is knocking on the door of stardom.
Byron has won at all types of tracks, including super-speedways, road courses, short tracks and intermediates. Winning at different track styles is incredibly important, but it is where the wins took place that could matter most.
Of his 11 victories, seven have come at this year's playoff tracks. While he has claimed victory only once in the playoffs (Texas 2023), that tune could change. Byron has won at four of the last five tracks NASCAR will visit this season, including Las Vegas, Homestead, Martinsville and the finale in Phoenix. Just last year, Byron won at Phoenix during the regular season, potentially foreshadowing what could happen in the title race this year.
Those aspirations don't seem far-fetched, with Byron cementing himself as NASCAR's hot hand. Whether that remains the case is up in the air, but it should come as no surprise if he caps this season off with a dominant championship run.
