NASCAR's Cup Series Crowd At Kansas Is Facing Criticism

For as exciting of a stop as Kansas Speedway can be on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar, Sunday's AdventHealth 400 was a bit of a disappointment — at least in the eyes of one of the sport's top insiders.

On a recent episode of "The Teardown," The Athletic's Jeff Gluck took NASCAR fans to task for the poor turnout at this weekend's race. Even though he acknowledged that Mother's Day was likely a factor in the less-than-enthusiastic reception in Kansas City, KS.

"I saw the crowd today at Kansas and I was very disappointed. I'll be honest, very disappointed. I don't understand where all the people were today at Kansas," Gluck said. "It had been — you didn't know how the race was gonna go today. That you know, it was going to be a butt-kicking from Kyle Larson."

"But why were the stands only like half full here today at Kansas? I know it was Mother's Day, but based on how good the racing has been here, shouldn't it have been just a much bigger crowd? I don't know."

"It's like — man, I don't know where everybody was," he continued. "I mean, to me, I was more excited to come to this racetrack than pretty much any other this year. I'm just like, dude, it wasn't even just like — it's an OK crowd. It seemed like a disappointing crowd to me."

This NASCAR season has been as exciting as any over the past few years so it has to be at least a little bit disappointing for Sunday's attendance to be so low.

But as Gluck acknowledged, there were some extenuating circumstances and it probably won't take long for the sport to bounce back. Especially with NASCAR's All-Star Race coming up May 18 at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
