Ty Dillon before the in-season NASCAR tournament was nothing more than an afterthought. The driver who wasn’t even as good as his brother. Now he’s the underdog fans can’t get enough of. It’s more than the shock run. It is the personality he’s shown throughout it.
Heading into Dover, the brand-new In-Season challenge is in the semifinal stage. If someone said they were expecting Ty Dillon to still be here, they would be a liar. Even his seed was indicative of his underdog status, being the last seed going up against the tournament founder, Denny Hamlin. He was 5th in points coming into Echopark Speedway, but tournament seeds and points positions are nothing compared to the almighty big one.
This helped the No. 10 to card a shocking top 8 finish. Hamlin finished a lowly 31st. It dumped out the founder earlier than he would’ve wanted. What started endearing the fan base to the rich kid was the moxie and playfulness he showed after the checkered flag. Playing on Hamlin’s Michigan quote “Daddy, I’m sorry, but I beat your favorite driver, folks, Dillon said “For all you Denny fans out there, I just knocked your favorite driver out,” earning him a lot of fans, as showing up Denny always will.
Three laps in, the job was complete thanks to help from a fellow Chevy driver! Carson Hocevar slammed into the wall off the Chicago turn 10 and spun, partially blocking the track. Brad Keselowski, AJ Allmendinger, Daniel Suarez, Austin Dillon, Todd Gilliland, Will Brown, and Riley Herbst were among those collected in the incident. I am sure you noticed that Ty Dillon wasn’t on that list. He sped past Keselowski and into the quarterfinals of the In-season Tournament.
Bowman was someone that won at a road course before and a couple of top 10’s at Sonoma. It was a challenge, but one Ty Dillon was confident heading into and ready to face. A wild final stage set up a final lap where Bowman was right in front of the younger Dillon brother, giving the world the perfect chance to see how important the tournament is to these drivers. As into Sonoma’s famous U-turn, Ty Dillon went full send and did a classic bump and run, moving the No. 48 out of the way to clinch a semifinal berth!
Henndricks’ Twitter account made a post mocking Dillon’s underdog status. After the race, Ty Dillon mocked them back, saying, “I do have to give a shout-out to Hendrick’s PR department and let them know the glass slipper fit one last time,” which must have hurt. They ended up deleting the tweet. With many of the top drivers lacking personality according to a lot of fans, Ty Dillon’s trash talk feels like a breath of fresh air to many fans. It is also exciting for everyone to follow.
His odds are pretty good! After going up against Gibbs, Roush, and Hendrick teams that currently combine to take up 8 of the top 10 spots in the standings, Ty Dillon now faces Legacy Motor Club, the Jimmie Johnson-owned team that bought out RPM. He has not gotten close to hitting RPM’s prime yet.
His best driver in points, Erik Jones is 18th.His only win came in 2022. His opponent is John Hunter Nemechek. He is better at Dover than Ty Dillon, averaging a 21.3 finish to Ty Dillon’s 25.1. That is much more beatable than Tyler Reddick or Ty Gibbs.
