76ers All-Star reveals hilarious details of how he learned he won major award

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey was a first-time All-Star during the 2023-24 campaign.

He earned his first major individual award on Tuesday night, edging out Chicago Bulls guard Coby White to earn Most Improved Player honors.

Maxey revealed entertaining details on Wednesday of how he found out that he won the hardware.

The former Kentucky star also took time to thank a host of veteran, current and former Sixers teammates he's had over his first four seasons.

Maxey narrowly beat White for the award, finishing with 51 first-place votes, 18 second-place votes and 10 third-place votes for 319 total points. Chicago's floor general garnered 32 first-place votes, 43 second-place votes and 16 third-place votes for 305 points.

Others who received first-place votes included Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun, Indiana Pacers two-time All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton, New York Knicks All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams and Washington Wizards small forward Deni Avdija.

Maxey was selected by the Sixers with the 21st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and spent much of his rookie season fighting for minutes off the bench behind the starting backcourt of Ben Simmons and Seth Curry. With Simmons out of the picture for the 2021-2022 campaign but James Harden coming aboard in February of that season, Maxey was still the team's third option behind Harden and star big man Joel Embiid.

The former Wildcat played in a career-high 75 games (74 starts) though and averaged 17.5 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds to finish sixth in the Most Improved Player voting.

Maxey averaged 20.3 points and shot a career-best 43.4% from three-point land during the 2022-23 campaign but played in a career-low 60 games.

He finished the 2023-24 season with career-highs in points (25.9), assists (6.2), rebounds (3.7), steals (1.0) and minutes per contest (37.5) across 70 games.
