Being labeled a liar by James Harden did not end up affecting Daryl Morey’s job security one bit.

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to sign Morey, their president of basketball operations, to a contract extension, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported Friday. Morey’s new deal will keep him in Philly through the 2027-28 season, aligning him with the contract of 76ers head coach Nick Nurse.

While Morey has mostly been in the headlines lately for his torched bridge with the former MVP Harden, he has done quite well overall since being hired by Philly before the 2020-21 season. Morey managed to dump Ben Simmons’ contract as part of the trade with the Brooklyn Nets for Harden and then later flipped Harden to the LA Clippers for a really strong return (including key role players Nicolas Batum and Robert Covington plus future draft capital).

The former NBA Executive of the Year Morey has also made other stellar moves such as the veteran-minimum signing of Kelly Oubre, the trade for starter De’Anthony Melton, and the coaching change where Doc Rivers was flipped out for Nurse.

The 76ers have gone 170-89 (.656) since Morey took over with Joel Embiid becoming an MVP winner and Tyrese Maxey blossoming into an All-NBA candidate. Morey may still have some tough waters to navigate ahead, but Philly is officially giving him the runway that he needs to do it.
