Could a big-money deal lure Rajon Rondo to Atlanta? Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Hawks plan to make 'significant offer' to free agent Rajon Rondo

After winning a championship with the Lakers, Rajon Rondo is set to become a free agent. According to Frank Isola, the Hawks are expected to offer the veteran point guard a hefty contract in order to entice him to come to Atlanta.

"Rajon Rondo is expected to receive a significant offer from the Atlanta Hawks ($15 million for two years guaranteed)," Isola tweeted.

The Hawks believe that Rondo would be a great veteran addition to a roster they believe is ready to compete for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Trae Young would also likely benefit from having Rondo as a teammate, with the veteran point guard potentially helping develop the younger point guard.

While Isola says that Rondo "remains focused on potentially joining the Clippers," it's unclear if the Clippers would be willing to match Atlanta's offer. And Rondo's preference to join Kawhi and Paul George may not outweigh the millions he could earn with the Hawks.

The 34-year-old proved he still has value in the playoffs, as he helped the Lakers win a championship, and it is now expected that he will earn a much higher payday on the free-agent market. The Lakers are apparently not planning to seriously pursue Rondo, as they will not be able to keep up with other teams' offers.

In order to compensate for the loss of Rondo, the Lakers traded Danny Green and the 28th pick in exchange for Dennis Schroder, who they hope will help their attempt at a repeat.
