Becky Hammon reportedly among Trail Blazers' top head-coaching candidates

Becky Hammon might finally get her chance to be a head coach in the NBA.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Hammon, an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs, is among the Portland Trail Blazers' top head-coaching candidates.

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley, Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Chauncey Billups, Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Mike D'Antoni and Spurs vice president of basketball operations Brent Barry are also among the candidates.

Hammon is also expected to interview for the Orlando Magic head-coaching position, Charania adds.

The Trail Blazers fired longtime head coach Terry Stotts two weeks ago. All-Star guard Damian Lillard then said he preferred Billups and Jason Kidd to be Portland's next head coach. Kidd withdrew his name from consideration last week.

Hammon is in her seventh year on Gregg Popovich's staff in San Antonio. She took over for Popovich on Dec. 30 after he got tossed from a game in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers, making her the first woman to act as head coach of an NBA team.

The 44-year-old had a successful career in the WNBA playing for the New York Liberty and the San Antonio Stars. She was a six-time WNBA All-Star and made the All-WNBA First Team twice.

Hammon has been a head-coaching candidate in the past, but has never been offered a job.
