Bill Murray wants credit for his contribution to Tune Squad win in 'Space Jam'
"Space Jam" is widely remembered as a Michael Jordan movie but one of his Tune Squad teammates is tired of being overlooked. Bill Murray appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and talked about his contribution to the legendary fictional win over the Monstars.
"People forget that I got the assist on the game-winning basket," Murray explained. "So easily forgotten. I stole the ball. I made the pass. I got nothing. I wasn’t even interviewed after. But that was a lot of fun making that."
Murray was speaking about "Space Jam" after it was featured in the latest episodes of "The Last Dance," which focuses on Jordan's career and final year with the Chicago Bulls. The 10-episode docuseries has dominated the cultural conversation and Murray confirmed that he has been watching.
"I’ve actually seen myself," he said. "‘There! I’m in the background! Right there! … Stop, play that back!'"
In the movie, Murray shows up during the climactic game between the Tune Squad and the Monstars, joining Jordan and the Looney Tunes to help save Bugs, Daffy and the rest of the crew from being enslaved by the aliens. Murray proves to be an invaluable contributor, helping Jordan score the game-winning basket.
Murray also spoke about his time working on "Space Jam," saying that during downtime he would play golf with Jordan and Larry Bird, who also appeared in the film.
“We would just go play golf for an hour, play three or four holes of golf with Larry Bird and Michael and myself. That was a lot of fun.”
Hopefully, Murray will finally get the credit he deserves when we discuss the Tune Squad's incredible upset of the heavily-favored Monstars, who stole basketball powers from the likes of Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing to transform into terrifying basketball monsters. Without Murray, the Looney Tunes might be providing entertainment at Moron Mountain for the rest of their lives.
