Bob Myers stepped down from his position as the president and general manager of the Golden State Warriors this week.

After a run that saw him take home two NBA Executive of the Year Awards and four NBA Championships, Myers decided that the time had come to call it quits.

Given his sheer impact on the sport of basketball over the past decade, this was obviously a huge development.

During his exit press conference, Myers broke down the real reason he was leaving the Warriors.

“I have too many different emotions that I’m still processing,” Myers said.

“But the bottom line is that this job the one I’m in, requires complete engagement and complete effort. If you can’t do it, then you shouldn’t do it and so that’s the answer. I can’t do that to our players, I can’t do that to Joe [Lacob].

“I really can’t do it to myself and that’s a question I’ve been wrestling with…I’ve only known how to do things one way my whole life and it doesn’t feel right to do something when I can’t give it my everything.”

While Myers’ point is no doubt somewhat true, it’s hard not to feel like part of the reason he is leaving is because of the tough road that lays ahead.

Draymond Green’s future with the Warriors is very much in doubt. Ditto for Klay Thompson. If Golden State doesn’t get either or both to take major pay cuts, then the only remaining options are trading them or having a $500 million payroll in 2023-24.

Warriors ownership will now likely elevate Kirk Lacob and VP of basketball operations Mike Dunleavy Jr. to fill the void left behind by Myers.

How will they ultimately navigate the murky waters ahead? Time will tell.
