Over the weekend, it was announced that Hawks shooting guard Bogdan Bogdanovic is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract at season’s end.
When healthy, Bogdanovic has been one of the Hawks better players — and their best shooter — over the last three seasons. He’s putting together another solid campaign, averaging just over 14 points on 40.1% from behind the arc, but a breakup this offseason almost feels like an inevitability.
Bogdanovic can ink a longer deal elsewhere this summer, and the Hawks likely aren’t going to be too interested in bringing him back. He’ll be 31 next year and has struggled with numerous injuries over the last few seasons. Bogdanovic might want to spend the rest of his prime years on a true contender, and the Hawks probably believe they can find a better use of their funds. I don’t think Bogi is to blame for much of the Hawks struggles this season, but this is a team that needs to take a look in the mirror this offseason and make significant adjustments. Perhaps that happens over the next month or so under Quin Snyder, but as of now, it’s a long shot Bogdanovic remains in Atlanta past this season.
