The Boston Celtics have dominated the court this season with an impressive 64-18 record, positioning themselves as formidable contenders in the Eastern Conference on their journey to the NBA Finals. Currently holding a commanding 3-1 lead over the Miami Heat in the first round, their success is largely attributed to the exceptional leadership of team president and former head coach, Brad Stevens, who recently received notable recognition for his achievements.
According to a report by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Stevens has been honored with the NBA’s Executive of the Year award, surpassing Sam Presti of the Oklahoma City Thunder who secured second place, followed by Tim Connelly of the Minnesota Timberwolves in third.
Stevens orchestrated significant moves during the offseason following the Celtics’ previous season setback, where they fell short in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat after trailing 3-0 in the series.
One of the pivotal decisions made by Stevens was the trade involving fan favorite and former Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart, who was sent to the Memphis Grizzlies. In return, the Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, both of whom seamlessly integrated into the team and played instrumental roles in their dominance in the East.
Porzingis was part of a three-team deal that saw Smart heading to the Grizzlies, with Boston also gaining two first-round picks while sending Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala to the Washington Wizards along with a second-round pick.
On the other hand, Holiday was acquired in exchange for Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and two first-round picks.
These strategic trades proved to be highly successful, contributing significantly to the Celtics’ success this season and ultimately earning Stevens well-deserved recognition in the form of prestigious hardware.
