The Chicago Bulls have lost another key player for the remainder of the season after the team announced that Patrick Williams will undergo surgery to repair a stress reaction in his left foot.

The 22-year-old had been sidelined since January 25 due to what initially was a bone edema. However, tests that were recently done revealed the extent of the injury and the team’s medical experts believe surgery is the best course of action to get the promising forward back to full health.

Another short season

Whatever hopes the Bulls had of getting Williams back in the lineup to help in the stretch run were finally dashed with the news of his upcoming surgery. The Florida State product will join All-Star wingman Zach LaVine on the sidelines after he also underwent season-ending surgery to repair his ailing foot.

This marks the second season wherein Williams played in less than 50 games. He played only 17 games in the 2021-2022 season due to a broken wrist. He ends his 2023-2024 campaign with averages of 10 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists—numbers nearly identical to the ones he posted last season when he played in all 82 regular season games.

Bad timing

The timing of Williams’ injury couldn’t have been worse, as he is headed toward restricted free agency and was hoping another team would offer a substantial contract. However, with this development, the Bulls will likely re-sign him to a figure of their choosing.

Williams has been a solid contributor off the bench for the Bulls, providing energy on both ends of the court. He was also known for his high-flying dunks and impressive athleticism. The team will definitely miss his presence and versatility as they make their push for the playoffs.
