Boston has been a rare, populated Eastern Conference city that has never been the home of a WNBA team. It stands out knowing Boston and the Celtics are an NBA capital of the world.

Grousbeck had told Axios' Dan Primack at Axios BFD in New York that there had been some discussions underway regarding the fact.

"Stay tuned, but I'm not sure," said Grousbeck. "I've heard some rumblings."

The idea of the WNBA coming to Boston is fascinating, but there is one significant hurdle. The Celtics do not own their home arena, TD Garden. The owner of the building is Delaware North, a hospitality and food service company based in Buffalo, New York.

Grousbeck noted how he has been open to the situation's possibilities since the idea was first brought to life.

"I've been open to it all along, except that it just doesn't work out as well if you don't own the building," he added.

The WNBA has teams in significant sports cities such as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington out East. In the West, of course, there are Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, and Las Vegas. The closest the league has gotten to Boston has been the Connecticut Sun.

The timing also adds up, with Grousbeck also recently stating that the organization has been in pursuit of having the NBA All-Star game in Boston. The Golden State Warriors had recently been nearing an agreement to host the 2025 All-Star game and have also added their own WNBA expansion team. Grousbeck acknowledges that the team's hopes remain alive.

TD Garden and Boston are currently in the mix for multiple exciting additions. The cities' rich tradition for sports and passion would only be amplified by adding a WNBA team to the mix.
