Last week, we flipped the calendars to May, meaning the discussion surrounding the 2022 rookie class is coming to a close. Instead, they’re being replaced with talks of the looming 2023 draft class, and it’s not hard to see why. A quick viewing of any Victor Wembenyama or Scoot Henderson highlights offers a first-hand explanation.
But still, the story of the 2022 draft class’ debut season has not come to a close yet. While rookie of the year candidates Paolo Banchero and Jalen Williams have been gearing up for their sophomore seasons for quite a while, and Kings sensation Keegan Murray just saw his season end at the hands of Game Seven Stephen Curry, the Denver Nuggets’ Christian Braun is still representing the group.
After winning last year’s national championship over the UNC Tarheels, Christian Braun was selected by Denver with the 21st pick in last June’s draft. He appeared in 76 games this regular season and made six starts. In these appearances, he averaged 15. minutes, 4.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.5 steals per game. Additionally, the former Kansas Jayhawk hoisted up 1.3 3s per contest and canned 35.4% of these looks.
While Braun wasn’t quite a rookie of the year contender or even in many all-rookie team discussions, he did manage to aid the Nuggets in grabbing the top seed in the Western Conference. His minutes were inconsistent all year, and his spot in the rotation was never given on any particular night. Nonetheless, when called upon, he stepped into his role and added value. The 22-year-old quickly became a fan favorite in Ball Arena for his blend of offensive skill, defensive keenness, and relentless hustle.
Braun’s contributions have carried over to the playoffs, where he’s helping Denver dominate. Their only loss in seven games has come at the hands of Anthony Edwards’ brilliance. Braun has been a legitimate part of this success. He’s appeared in every game and eclipsed the ten-minute mark in all but two contests. The 6-foot-6 wing hasn’t been scoring too many points but continues to play his role to a tee. He’s taking his defensive assignments seriously, helping on the boards, and just making hustle plays that don’t show up on the box score.
Braun’s stints will be fun to watch as Denver’s playoff run continues on Friday night.
